26th March 2012 NSA Briefing on the discovery of Schmallenberg virus in England IntroductionIt is most likely that the infection was transmitted by insects during the late summer/autumn of last year and the risk of further infection being transmitted from these farms is low. There are currently no implications to trade and no ‘firewall movement barriers’ being put in place in the UK, although Russia has put in place export bans on live ruminants and ruminant products from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, where Schmallenberg virus has been present for some time. 26th March 2012 NSA Cymru/Wales Regional Report John Lloyd stepped down from the Chair of NSA Cymru/Wales he has been a great ambassador for NSA and although not in office I am sure he will keep up the good work. John is succeeded by David Pittendreigh who was born and brought up in Aberdeenshire and after attending Agricultural College went on to become a shepherd on the Black Isle with a flock of North Country Cheviots. 25th March 2012 NSA Honours Past CEO Peter Morris, Livestock Development Manager at VION Food, and immediate past CEO of NSA was presented with the 2011 George Hedley Memorial award by the National Sheep Association at an industry dinner in London on the 14th February.The annual award is given to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the UK sheep sector. 19th March 2012 Sheep Worrying Questionnaire The National Sheep Association (NSA) has put in place a new service to record incidents of sheep worrying by dogs. The aim is to create an accurate picture of cases of sheep worrying across the UK, providing information that can be used to increase awareness and improve responsible behaviour by dog owners. 14th March 2012 2011 George Hedley Memorial Award At the last meeting of NSA Council in December, it was announced that the winner of the 2011 George Hedley Memorial Award is previous NSA CEO, Peter Morris. The award is given annually by NSA to someone who is recognized as having made an outstanding contribution to the sheep industry. Read More
1st February 2012 NSA Central Region Report 2012 marks an exciting new dawn for the N.S.A with a major change of structure. Along with Matt Bagley and Charles Sercombe I am one of the three Central Region Members of the English Committee and attended on 15th December the inaugural Meeting at, of all places, The Royal Institution of Naval Architects in Belgravia. 27th January 2012 NI Regional Report 2012 has begun with numerous consultations needing replies from N.I. Region. Most important for us is the new CAP Proposals which are expected to come into force in 2014. N.I. Region would be totally opposed to suggestions regarding ‘Greening’ and the ways of investigating the eligibility of ‘active farmers’. Read More
