Celebrate St David’s Day with delicious Welsh Lamb

28th February 2023

As proud Welsh citizens prepare to celebrate their national day tomorrow (Wednesday 1st March) both in Wales and further afield, the National Sheep Association (NSA) is recommending a delicious meal of Welsh Lamb to mark the occasion.

NSA Chief Executive Phil Stocker says: “St David’s Day couldn’t be a better opportunity to demonstrate your support for Wales’s national day, by choosing to eat Welsh lamb. Lamb raised on Welsh grassland is probably the food most synonymous with the Welsh landscape, its climate, and culture, and we also know that it’s a sustainable food with low levels of transport and food processing. Cooked with a few Welsh leeks there is no better way to celebrate this day of national festivities.”

Many Welsh sheep farmers will soon be welcoming the arrival of new lambs across the country but an abundance of lambs from last year are now ready for the consumer to enjoy having been raised naturally and maturing into a flavoursome source of protein. Used in a traditional Welsh Cawl or a mid-week roast, St David's Day is a great reason to add lamb to shopping baskets this week.

NSA Cymru / Wales Development Officer Helen Roberts adds:The best choice for St David's Day is meat from the lambs raised on the wonderful rich pastures and hillsides of Wales giving the meat its distinctive sweet flavour. What better way to support the culture of Wales and sustain the rural communities.”
