Meeting people and sharing information and experiences was a key driver for Kathryn when applying to join the ambassador programme this year. Her current job as Promotions and Communications Office for the Lleyn Sheep Society and past experience working as a business reporter for Scottish Farmer has already raised her awareness of the value of this. “Meeting a multitude of people you get a sense of what mindset is required in order to make a positive change to your business and the sector as a whole,” she comments. As well as the chance to network, Kathryn is looking forward to gaining useful advice to help further her small flock of Blue Texel and Charollais sheep. She plans to begin performance recording this year with the aim of being recognised for producing naturally reared tups that have good longevity and are able to thrive in both commercial and pedigree settings.

June/July Update

Following our second NSA Next Generation Ambassador workshop back in May, it was straight home to focus on weaning our January and February-born pedigree lambs. At this point, we FEC tested the group in batches and only wormed as required, with the addition of a mineral drench just to see them through until the back end. Lambs were also crutched and Clik'd to cover them throughout the warmer weather, and moved to fresh pasture for them to grow on naturally.

With a busy show season fast approaching, the next job was to shear everything before mid-June, whilst also trying to stay ahead with trimming our show stock. After sorting through our breeding stock and culling any problematic ewes, the focus now shifts to the fast approaching breeding season. We are busy trying to get our sale stock ready for the upcoming August sales, but not before getting a select few ewes ready for ET and AI work at the end of this month. All whilst up and down the country with work at shows - it never stops!
