Hamish grew up on a sheep farm and his grandfather was a well renowned sheep breeder. After spending the past decade in professional sport, Hamish has returned to his farming roots and is preparing to take on his own tenancy later this year. His journey has taken him to sheep farms across the world, including New Zealand and Argentina, giving him a broad and valuable outlook. Now firmly focused on building his own business, Hamish is eager to learn from others at all stages of their farming careers.
Hamish says: “I’d love to meet people starting out, as well as those who’ve built successful enterprises, and learn from their experiences.”

There’s something about the longer summer evenings that makes everything feel that bit more rewarding and I’ve really been enjoying spending more time outside, making the most of being out on the farm.
I’ve returned from the second session of the NSA Next Generation Ambassadors programme in Devon full of enthusiasm and ideas. One of the most valuable parts of the trip was seeing such a wide range of businesses and farming systems, from the uplands of Dartmoor to the scientific trials at Rothamsted Research. Each visit offered something different, whether that was land management, innovation, research or technology and it was interesting to hear how each business approaches the challenges and opportunities within the sector.
Since then, I’ve finished building a mill for the micro flour company I’ve set up with my cousin, who is a baker in the neighbouring village. I’m really looking forward to seeing this side of the business develop.
I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity to get out to visit other farms and look at different grazing systems, picking up ideas that I can hopefully implement on my own farm. That feels especially timely as I prepare to take on a grazing licence and three arable fields in September. I’m looking forward to putting some of what I’ve learned into practice.
