Understanding carbon for your farm and your business

Date: 6th October 2025

Time: 11am

Location: Pixton Farm, Iddesleigh, Devon, EX19 8BR

On 6th October, members and non-members from NSA South West Region were treated to a very interesting farm walk and talk courtesy of regional committee member Chris McWhirter, AHDB's Senior Environment Manager Mary Vickers, and farm carbon expert Prof John Gilliland.

During talks and interesting discussion with Chris, Mary and John, attendees heard about the work AHDB is doing as part of its five-year environmental baselining project. Working across participating farms across the UK, the project is looking to quantify the impact of farming (both positive and negative) on the environment. As part of this they are assessing carbon stocks and change, including in the soil to give a full picture of our climate impact.

It was also great to have Professor Gilliland present on some of the research he's been involved in. This research combined with the environmental baselining project will provide important evidence to defend our industry and quantify the true value of livestock farming in combatting climate change.

Many thanks to all those who attended, and to John, Mary and particularly Chris and family for making it such an interesting and interactive event.
