NSA South West Region Ram Sale

Positive clearance rates and improved averages were the themes of the day at the National Sheep Association (NSA) South West Region Ram Sale held at Exeter Livestock Market yesterday (Wednesday 20th August 2025).
With a buzzing atmosphere around the Kivells rings buyers were looking for stronger rams of which there were plenty for them to choose from.
Suffolks were the trade of the day with a 100% clearance for shearlings selling at an average of 1138gns. Jim and Nicki Hartwright, Worcester, topped the day at 2,700gns with another at 2,000gns. Demand for the Suffolks saw the family’s nine rams all sell well resulting in an average for the groups of 1453gns. The Quick family from Crediton, Devon, sold Suffolks to 2200gns, whilst the Derryman family, Honiton, Devon, sold to 1600gns and Andrew and Wendy Reed, Cullompton, Devon, to 1000gns.
The top price Texel shearling came from FH Chave and Son, Wellington, Somerset, selling to 2350gns with others well over 1100gns to average 1121gns. Malcolm and Kim Coumbe, Liskeard, Cornwall, weren’t far behind at 2150gns. Others selling for over 1000gns included Robert and Rebecca Jordan, Chagford, Devon, Jim and Nicki Hartwright, Michael Lear, Tiverton, Devon, Ben Roberts, Lympstone, Devon, and Chris Ruby, Launceston, Cornwall.
Texel females had a 100% clearance with Henry Summerhayes, Wellington, Somerset, topping the trade at 1800gns.
The Quick family enjoyed a good day, topping the crossbred trade at 1050gns and also selling Texels for more than 1000gns.
Beltex rams had a 100% clearance for shearling rams with Ian Braund, Holsworthy, Devon, having the top price of 650gns whilst Border Leicesters from Sue Martyn, Launceston, Devon, sold to 1050gns and 1000gns.
Charollais were the final breed in Ring 2 and shearling rams had a great trade with 100% clearance and an average of 950gns for the 39 sold. Once again it was the Quick family who had the highest price at 2300gns, Tom Nancekivell, Bude, Cornwall, made 1450gns of his best and the day’s pre sale show champion from Ben and Amelia Watts, Ashburton, Devon, sold to 1400gns.
