NSA Marches Region - Halal – Dispelling the myths and exploring the market
Date: 27th May 2025
Time: 6.30pm for a prompt start at 7pm
Location: Shipston Rugby Football Club, Mayo Road, Shipston-on-Stour, Warwickshire, CV36 4BH
NSA members and others from across NSA Marches Region came together on Tuesday evening to join an interesting discussion on the UK halal market and its importance to the sheep sector. Led by AHDB Halal Sector Manager Awal Fuseini, attendees were able to openly ask questions about the market and also learn more about halal methods of processing lambs and the Muslim festivals that place sheep meat at the centre of celebrations.
NSA Marches Region Manager Katie James reports: “Those that have heard Awal speak before will know how interesting and engaging he makes discussions on this topic. Information shared by Awal such as the percentage of Muslims that eat lamb each week (66%) versus the non-population that do (6%), provided a clear message of just how crucial it is to the UK sheep sector. But the methods of halal slaughter understandably are questioned by many even though 75% sheep slaughtered in halal abattoirs in the UK are now stunned.
“The evening concluded with an excellent butchery demonstration from AHDB Trade Butcher Martin Eccles who ably demonstrated the cuts demanded for the halal market explaining how the community is changing to utilise the carcase in different ways.”
Thank you to AHDB for providing the speakers for the evening and for helping to organise the event.
