The latest farmer-oriented discussion session in the Grazing for Good project was held near Keswick on Wednesday.

A range of stakeholders were in attendance,

including Natural England and the Lake District National Park. Professor Robin Pakeman of the Hutton Institute discussed the peer-reviewed science around heather and grass management under different grazing regimes.

The project has assembled a scientific panel to consult with Natural England on its report Grazing Regimes for Nature Recovery. The project follows work instigated by West Lakeland CIC, Federation of Cumbria Commoners, and the Herdwick Sheep Breeders Association.

More farmer meetings will be held post-lambing in Lakeland locations to gather thoughts around stewardship scheme design. NSA will update members as to future meeting dates as they are confirmed.

The Grazing for Good project was initiated by the Herdwick Sheep Breeders Association, Federation of Cumbria Commoners and West Lakeland CIC, and is now supported and project-managed by NSA, made possible through donations from local agricultural organisations and FiPL funding from the Lake District National Park.
