Forage for CH4nge: Feed, flock and future webinar

Date: 16th March 2026

Time: 7.30pm-8.30pm

Location: Online via Teams Webinar

How Heritage Breeds and Pasture Choices Shape Low-Impact Sheep Farming

The Forage for CH4nge project aims to improve sustainability and move towards net zero farming by investigating emissions and forage utilisation in native Swaledale sheep compared to crossbred sheep on the upland landscape forage, something that has never been studied before.

Funded by Innovate UK, it measured the methane emissions from sheep by placing them individually in a portable accumulation chamber (PAC).

Led by Wensleydale farmer Adrian Thornton-Berry, this project measured methane emissions from 120 sheep grazing three pasture types: improved grassland, species-rich grassland and regenerating moorland.

Hear how Swaledale sheep shape forage dynamics, support biodiversity and drive sustainable upland grazing systems. Discover the ecological and practical benefits of key forage species, learn how grazing behaviour interacts with pasture composition and take-home insights to inform your own farming practice.

Key findings from methane tests and vegetation surveys will be shared, giving attendees a look at the project’s findings and implications for sustainable sheep farming.
