NSA Eastern Region farm walk

Date: 21st September 2022

Time: 3pm

Location: Belvoir Castle, NG32 1PE

NSA Eastern Region is delighted to invite you to attend a farm walk at Belvoir Castle, Grantham, NG32 1PE on Wednesday 21st September 2022.

Please enter via the main gates into Belvoir Castle and turn immediately right up the hill towards the Castle, from which the meeting point will be sign posted.

The walk will commence at 3pm.

Nick Smith, the shepherd at Belvoir, runs a flock of 1,600 breeding ewes, mainly North Country Mules which are put to a Charollias or New Zealand Suffolk ram. The ewes are out wintered and lamb outdoors from the last week of April onwards. No supplementary feed is used as a routine, with silage bales offered as required. Nick finishes as many lambs as possible, but some stores are sold in late summer to prevent ewes losing body condition, reducing scanning percentages or need for supplementary feed over winter.

Nick also manages a spring calving herd of cows, that are housed throughout winter on big bale silage. The herd comprises of Herefords and Shorthorn cross cattle.
