Scottish upland sheep farmer wins NSA prize

1st December 2021

Winning a Solway lamb adopter will certainly ease lambing time for Lucy Beattie from Ullapool on the West coast of Scotland who is the latest winner of National Sheep Association’s (NSA) membership prize this year.

With her family, Lucy farms 200 North Country Cheviot and Mule breeding ewes alongside tourism diversification businesses on grass and hill parkland. She recently won the lamb adopter, kindly supplied by recycled product manufacturer Solway Recycling after deciding to join NSA.

Lucy says: “I am beyond delighted to have won this prize. I joined NSA as I have been impressed how the association is supporting young sheep farmers and also upland livestock production, two things close to my heart. With ongoing change for our sector too I thought I should join as strength is in numbers and the more sheep folk who can get together and talk about sheep, and lobby those in positions of power, the better.

On signing up for NSA membership Lucy was entered into the prize draw and becomes the third winner of the NSA prize this year. She receives a lamb adopter kindly donated by quality recycled product manufacturer Solway Recycling as part of NSA’s 2021/22 membership prize giveaway.

All new members signing up to join NSA between February 2021 and the middle of February 2022 will be entered into the future prize draws. There is now just one more chance for new members of NSA to win a lamb adopter or lamb warming box and sheep pens kindly donated by Solway Recycling as part of NSA’s 2021 membership prize giveaway. Existing NSA members also have the chance to win by recommending a friend, family member or neighbour sign up too. There is no limit to the number of entries for existing members, the more recommendations made, the more entries earned. Find out more at www.nationalsheep.org.uk/draw.

Lucy was thrilled to receive the news of her win and is confident the prize will help her this coming lambing season. She comments: “I am beyond delighted to have won this prize. I have chosen the Solway lamb adopter and this will really help at lambing as often I get shearling ewes who aren’t too keen to take to their lambs and there can be a lot of time spent standing with them and trying to persuade them to bond with their lamb. This piece of equipment will help to manage this in a secure fashion and save a lot of time in the middle of the night holding lambs on.”

Founded more than 20 years ago Solway Recycling Ltd is highly experienced in the recycling of waste agricultural products. By running its own farm waste collection service and then returning many products back onto farm in a new and usable form a closed loop is created both ecologically & physically.

In addition to the opportunity to win one of these excellent Solway prizes, NSA membership subscription importantly supports NSA’s work to provide a voice for the UK sheep sector and gives access to a wide range of benefits which are detailed on the NSA website here.
