NSA South West Region leadership continues with the next generation of sheep farmers

10th March 2022

The National Sheep Association (NSA) South West Region elected its second consecutive Next Generation Ambassador to the role of regional Chairman at its recent Annual Regional Members Meeting (ARMM).

Taking over the Chairman’s position from outgoing Chairman Howard Tratt is Olly Matthews who farms near Yatton, Somerset.

Olly takes on the new role having previously served as Vice Chairman for the regional committee and representing the region, that includes the counties of Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall and on the NSA English Committee.

Olly farms in partnership with his brother Edward running 650 Highlander ewes, 230 store cattle and rearing 1700 Christmas turkeys on the family farm.

Speaking of his new appointment, Olly says: I am really pleased and honoured to be taking on the Chairman’s role of the South West region of NSA. Since becoming involved with the committee as an NSA Next Generation Ambassador several years ago I have gained a lot which I hope to build on further during my next two years as Chairman. I, along with all of the region, thank outgoing Chairman Howard for his fantastic work over the past two years.”

Also at the recent meeting, South Devon sheep farmer and NSA Next Generation Ambassador Richard Rossiter was elected into the position of Vice Chairman.

NSA South West Region Secretary Ian May comments: It is great to be working with such a committed and dynamic committee, drawn from a wide cross-section of those working in the sheep industry in the South West. The election of two NSA Next Generation Ambassadors in succession shows the value of this programme to both the individuals involved and the NSA as a whole. By placing the chairmanship in their hands, it helps to ensure that issues facing new entrants to the industry, and those at the start of their career, are front and centre of our discussions.”
