NSA South West Region Next Generation Shepherd Competition

Date: 21st May 2022

Time: 11am

Location: Gupworthy Farm, Wheddon Cross, Somerset, TA24 7DA

After being delayed from the autumn we have now managed to hold our South West Next Generation Shepherd competition and farm walk at Gupworthy Farm, Wheddon Cross courtesy of Richard and Carolyn Webber and Family. On behalf of the South West Committee I would like to thank all those who were involved in making it such a successful day. The Webber Family and their team had worked extremely hard to lay on a great location and event for all those who could attend.

The NSA South West Next Generation Shepherd competition was split into 6 sections including ATV handling, shearing, lamb selection, veterinary skills and knowledge, and legislative knowledge.  On the day we had 6 entrants to the competition and all demonstrated their skills well and when the final scores were tallied the was little to separate them, however, particular congratulations go to Martin Harris of Liskard, Owen Pengelly of Bodmin, and William Land of Wheddon Cross who won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place respectively. We hope that Martin and Owen can go forward to represent the South West at the National Competition in July.

All those who attended were also treated to a farm tour of Gupworthy including the Webber’s flock of North Country Mules, mixed herd of Limousin and Angus cross suckler cows and examples of their grassland improvement.

Finally, many thanks to those who provided sponsorship or equipment on the day including Mole Valley Farmers who provided the prize money, OHG Quads for the loan of an ATV, and additional sponsorship and support from Shearwell, Exmoor Farmers Livestock Auctions, FeedCo, Harpers Feeds and British Wool.
