NSA Northern Region and Carr's Billington Next Generation Shepherd Competition

Date: 29th August 2021

Location: Laypool Farm, Renwick, Penrith, Cumbria CA10 1JL

A successful event was held at Laypool Farm, Renwick near Penrith thanks to our generous and enthusiastic hosts Daniel & Jackie Taylforth.

15 competitors came forward with a number taking part in the new under 18 years old category. Compulsory tasks included the husbandry and welfare alongside the health and welfare questionnaire. Other tasks on offer, of which competitors chose three, included stockjudging, lamb selection, ATV handling, sheep dog handling and Feed & Grain ID.

All judges commented on the high level of knowledge shown by all competitors in the various talks. Regional Chairman Thomas Carrick was one of the judges for the husbandry and welfare task, he reported how impressed he was with the level of knowledge and details being given to him saying: "I would be happy for any of today's competitors to work with my sheep”

The results saw William Harrison from Staveley win the under 18 Novice class. Matthew Fearon of Keswick came back to defend his title winning the over 18’s class and the Trophy for the second time. Well done to all those who took part. Matthew and second place Intermediate, Thomas Watson now qualify to go forward and represent the Northern Region at the finals being held at the Sheep Event in Malvern July 2022.

Thank you to all who helped to judge and steward on the day.  Also thanks you to Carr’s Billington for generously sponsoring both the cash prize money to the tune of £1,000 and supplying the ATV.
