Farm Summary
Marsh Farm has around 100 suckler cows (50% spring, 50% autumn calving) with an extra 31 heifers being added into the herd this year. The aim is to increase the herd to 150 in the next few years.  The commercial cows are put to Limousin bulls.  The focus on spring calving cows is to reduce the wintering costs.  Within the 100, there are 34 pedigree South Devons which are bred pure and some of the heifers will be used as replacements for the commercial herd.  The aim for the commercial herd is to be South Devon based.   In addition there are 100 Suffolk and Suffolk X Mule ewes (lambing late March/early April), put to Southdown rams. The farm has 350 acres of grassland - 250 rented from RSPB with some grazing restriction; the majority being managed by sward height targets for the birds. Some hay is made on this environmental grazing land. Thirty autumn calving cows graze a field with free range chickens from May to August. 100 acres of grassland is close to the farm with 70 acres of silage ground, (high yielding perennial ryegrass mixtures) and 20-30 acres of permanent pasture rotationally grazed with ewes, lambs and show stock. Depending on the year and availability of grass, hay is made on the land close to the farm which is sold to horse owners. Due to an increase in stock numbers and shed capacity, yearling stores have been sold with the aim of steers being sold as stores and heifers being finished.  The majority of lambs are finished on grass with aftermath grazing being used.

All stock is turned out by the beginning of May.
